A MURAL recognising key workers has popped up in Oxford. The mural in Manzil Way Gardens, Cowley Road is the latest in a series of artworks commissioned by Fusion Arts. In September, three murals spreading the message of staying safe were created. The artist behind the latest mural, Tommy Watkins, said: “A walk down Cowley Road is a treat for the senses: smells of delicious food from all over the world; sounds of many languages and accents, and sights to keep any coffee shop dweller occupied for hours. “I wanted this mural to reflect the amazing energy and diversity of this important area of Oxford as a way to send a message of hope and gratitude to both the key workers of the NHS and local community.” ....

But a pivotal exploration near the Earth’s equator changed her research focus forever. The expeditions were at the Pacific Ocean coral atoll of Kiritimati or Christmas Island during and in the aftermath of the 2015-2016 El Niño. Heat stress from that El Niño event triggered the third-ever global coral bleaching event, causing mass coral bleaching and mortality on reefs around the world. Christmas Island, where Baum has worked for more than a decade, was the event’s epicentre. ....
