Review: 'The Woman in the Window' is a psychological non-thriller

The Woman in the Window , an overstuffed, floridly preposterous psycho-thriller starring Amy Adams, is the kind of movie that would love to be described as Hitchcockian. But the resemblances are cosmetic at best; really, a better term might be “Hitchcocky,” which comes closer to capturing its brand of swaggering, self-conscious homage.
A meticulously controlled frenzy of a movie, it’s less interested in reproducing Hitch’s mastery of suspense than in repurposing his most famous twists and tropes, pelting you with strenuously clever parallels to Vertigo , Psycho and the like and that’s not even mentioning the lodger, the vanishing lady or one hell of a family plot. ....

The Woman in the Window arrives on Netflix with more baggage than the ocean liner QE2. You could probably make a decent mini-series about the making of the film itself.
First there’s the source material, the best-selling 2018 debut novel of Daniel Mallory, published under the name A.J. Finn. The book bears no relation to the 1944 Fritz Lang film noir of the same name, though the author has been accused of copying elements of a 1995 film named, ironically, ....

This past week we saw the 93rd Academy Awards give the Best Actress Award to Frances McDormand, again, for the 3rd time in her career. This is just one behind the record holder, Katherine Hepburn, who has 4 Oscars. But are these two the greatest of all time?
Well before you read my list below, let me explain how I judged it.
First, it is NOT by how many awards they won. So chill out, Kate Hepburn and Frances McDormand did NOT make my Top 10 but they did make the Top 20. If it was just Oscars, they would be 1 and 2. Instead, I judged these leading ladies by how consistently compelling they are when they appear on the silver screen. It did NOT matter how many movies they did. To me, it’s more of how they grab my attention when they act. In other words, when I see their name on the marquis do I immediately want to watch the movie just because of the top-billed actress. ....
