Police found three rifles, a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun, and ammunition including shotgun cartridges and rifle rounds of different calibres. The man was arrested at the address and charged with four counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one of unlawful possession of explosives, namely ammunition. He was due to appear in the Gisborne District Court on Monday. “Seizing these firearms and getting them out of the hands of those who should not have them is significant for our community,” Wairoa area response manager Senior Sergeant Maui Aben said. “Police are still to determine where the firearms originated from and whether they have been used in any recent firearms incidents in the wider Wairoa area.”
An East Cape pharmaceutical company has admitted planting mānuka over at least a hectare of regionally-significant wetland without consent.
Gisborne District Council officers found a pump, hose and irrigation equipment running into the wetland in February last year.

Tairāwhiti Pharmaceuticals has pleaded guilty to modifying and taking water from Te Whare Wetlands in breach of the Resource Management Act, after Gisborne District Council laid charges.
The company excavated 460m of channels in the wetlands to reduce flooding of its mānuka plantation, which has been used to produce mānuka oil at its Te Araroa factory.

Four gang members have been arrested in Wairoa following an operation targeting organised crime on Wednesday.
The men, aged 20, 36, 45, and 54, were arrested for outstanding warrants or bail breaches.
One appeared in the Gisborne District Court on Wednesday, and the other three are due to appear this week.
A Police spokesperson said they would continue to target gangs and anyone else who involves themselves in organised crime.
