Monument moved in Fort Washakie Tuesday


(Fort Washakie, WY) – WYDOT District 5 shared this afternoon that a multi-agency collaborative effort was finished today, June 22nd, with the move of a monument that was dedicated in 1941.
The project involved “the Wind River Inter-Tribal Council Department of Transportation, Wyoming State Parks, Eastern Shoshone Tribe’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office, Frank B. Wise Business Center, and WYDOT,” according to their announcement.

The monument, which was located in a turnout on US-287, was “moved hundreds of feet to the north and the
[sic] Wise Business Center.”
The highway turnout where it previously resided will be removed, according to WYDOT.
The plaque on the monument reads: “Sacajawea, Guide of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 1805. Dedicated by the Historical Landmark Commission of Wyoming 1941. Grave 2 miles west.” ....
