In early 1921 Liberal British prime minister Lloyd George, heading a coalition government, was coming under both military and Conservative pressure to destroy the IRA. Following military advice, in January 1921 additional counties of Ireland were subjected to martial law. Kilkenny and Wexford were included in Leinster. A strong wind was blowing the sound away from where the other Volunteers were billeted, removing any last chance they had of help arriving. The battle continued for over two hours before Sean Finn was shot. He called out to his comrades, as he fell mortally wounded: “Goodbye lads carry on I am done” ....

John Maguire, the retired garda, was sparing up this one for when our pub opens up. But he couldn’t help himself. John and his wife Breda moved in from the famed parish of Duagh to suburban Clieveragh, just up the road from me. They frequent John B’s on occasion and no nicer couple would you find anywhere.
