OXFORD Springville is one win away from its fifth state softball championship. Three straight comeback wins on Friday in the first day of Class 6A state tournament action has put the fourth-ranked Tigers (39-10) in the championship series on Saturday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford. Head coach Brandon Easterwood’s club then notched two winner’s bracket victories over top-ranked Athens and No. 6 Hazel Green. ....

The No. 1-ranked Huskies extended their current win streak to 17 games with victories over Baker (5-4), No. 10 Hoover (11-1) and No. 4 Bob Jones (8-2). Photo by Vickie Unlap Hewitt polished off Thursday with a come-from-behind win over the Patriots, as the Area 6 champions posted 14 hits and stranded nine Bob Jones runners on base. The Huskies (48-2-1) scored at least one run in five of their six plate appearances. ....

The Tigers (37-10) shoved in six of their runs with two outs on, junior Makalyn Kyser smacked two home runs, senior Reagan Cornelius pitched four-plus shutout innings of relief and Springville started up its tournament run with a 10-3 victory over Saraland. The East Central Regional champions pushed two across in the bottom of the first, one in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the sixth. ....

Lord’s timely contact moves her huskies into the winner’s bracket against No. 10 Hoover. First pitch from Choccolocco Park is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Baker sophomore Emily Mizelle led off the first-round contest with a solo homer into center field. Her high-hanger caught a stiff Oxford breeze and carried the fence for a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. ....

The defending state champion Huskies (45-2-1) qualified for state play with a 2-0 showing last Friday in the East Central Regional from Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
