A massive redevelopment in Miami s Little Haiti is scaled back, but it s still blocked
Andres Viglucci, The Miami Herald
Jun. 3 After a three-year standoff with critics, developers behind a plan for a controversial mixed-use project covering 23 acres on the edge of Miami s Little Haiti have submitted a reimagined and scaled-back but still massive proposal to the city and they again ran into a wall of community skepticism at a public hearing Wednesday night.
After an hour of debate and sometimes acrimonious testimony, the city s Planning and Zoning Advisory Board voted 7-3 to once again postpone a vote on the proposed special area plan, originally known as Eastside Ridge but now rebranded as Sabal Palm Village at Flagler Trail, until September. ....

For the ninth time, the city of Miami’s Planning Zoning and Appeals Board deferred voting on a controversial mixed-use, high-rise project that would exceed 5 million square feet. It’s slated to replace the 512-unit Design Place apartment complex near Little Haiti.
By a vote of 7 to 3, the board deferred voting on the project formerly known as Eastside Ridge to Sept. 12. David Snow, Miami’s chief of urban design, said the planning department needs more time to analyze developer SPV Realty’s latest proposal, which was submitted in May. ....

Little Haiti Cryptocurrency Used to Support Miami Neighborhood

Little Haiti has its own superhero, and he s trying to help the community with an unlikely superpower: cryptocurrency.
Nandy Martin, who prefers to be known by his alter ego, Captain Haiti, has been a resident of Miami s Little Haiti neighborhood for the past five years. Easily recognizable when he walks or bikes down the street, Martin wears a cape, a red jumpsuit, and a circular shield adorned with the red and blue of the Haitian flag, in tribute to the Marvel Comics character Captain America.
Everybody calls me Captain Haiti now, especially kids. But even my friends don t realize who s calling them unless I say, It s Captain Haiti, Martin says. ....

Development project and pandemic a one-two-punch for residents

Vera De Souza insists she’s been a good tenant.
She’s lived in Design Place for the past eight years, and for most of that time has never missed a rent payment. That is, until COVID-19 came along and she lost her job as a restaurant worker. De Souza’s rental assistance is still being processed, but in the meantime her income is limited to weekly $275 unemployment checks and whatever money she can earn selling homemade masks. On top of that she is helping her daughter-in-law, who also lives in the complex, recover from a difficult birth.
De Souza said the property’s management told her they’d work with her, just as they had months ago when she first fell behind on her rent. But just 10 days before Christmas, she was served with an eviction notice. ....
