Anderson East talks new album, best rock singer, naming songs after women

In the best way, Anderson East’s voice has no color. Not white. Not black. And not white trying to sound black. Just a human expressing life’s joy and pain, as heard on his excellent new single “Madelyn.”
The track finds East’s sexy, supple pipes winding their way through a glistening arrangement built around synths and Mellotron. “Madelyn” is off East’s forthcoming album “Maybe We Never Die,” out Aug. 20.
The foundations of East’s sound and career have been roots music, particularly vintage R&B/soul, and he gets lumped into that now semi-dreaded category of beards, hats and strum: Americana. But “Maybe We Never Die,” which East coproduced with Philip Towns and Nashville mage supreme Dave Cobb, finds the singer/songwriter stretching his sonics. One track, titled “Drugs,” even has a disco vibe.
