Winnipeg police revenue drops, miss budget by $3.2 million

As Winnipeg’s crime problem persists, increases in Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) special duty policing (SDP) have created an over-budget situation for the fourth quarter of 2020, while city councillors have divergent views about the revenue benefits of SDP.
Despite an increase in SDP revenue, overall revenue at the WPS is down 5% in the quarter compared to 2019, resulting in a $3.2 million shortfall. The WPS attributes the loss mostly to COVID-19 related decreases in traffic enforcement.

Winnipeg's emergency dispatch review a 'finger-pointing' exercise, says one councillor

The city is examining ways to reduce dispatch demand on police, fire, and ambulance services. One city councillor says the examination is a sham.
According to a public service report tabled at the cityâs Protection Committee on Wednesday, there were 336,631 calls to the cityâs 911 call centre in 2019. Of these calls, 47% were non-urgent, meaning they didnât represent an immediate threat to life, limb, property, or personal security.
