Supervisors indicate support for new local option sales tax for unincorporated area of Louisa County Jim Rudisill for The Hawk Eye WAPELLO A resolution of support for a Sept. 14 referendum on a new local option sales tax for the unincorporated area of Louisa County was approved Tuesday by the county board of supervisors during its regular weekly meeting. In addition to the resolution of support, the board also approved a Letter of Bond Counsel Services with John Danos, Dorsey & Whitney LLP, Des Moines. Danos will help guide the referendum issue through the election for a fee of $3,500. The county board, along with the city councils of Columbus Junction and Grandview, need to hold a new referendum to continue assessing the 1% sales tax in their jurisdictions after Dec. 31, 2022. ....

Wapello Fire and Rescue responded to its second structure fire in three days when a pole building and its contents were destroyed Tuesday south of Wapello. Chief Damon Moore says they were called to 13121 40th Street shortly after 1:30 p.m. and heavy smoke could be seen from over five miles away. He says due to the nature of the call, the Morning Sun Fire Department was immediately requested for mutual aid. Moore says upon arrival, the pole building was engulfed in flames, but fighting the fire was challenging with the structure over 400 feet from the nearest road in an area along a bluff. The steep, narrow and icy condition of the driveway was also inaccessible for the fire trucks, forcing crews to drag hoses up the hill to battle the blaze which was fueled by a large amount of wood and chemicals stored in the building being utilized as a workshop. Firefighters remained on scene until shortly after 5:00 p.m. ....

At 1:35 p.m., Firefighters saw thick smoke from more than five miles away and on arrival found a pole barn/workshop fully engulfed in flames fueled by a very large amount of wood and chemicals stored inside, the department said in a press release. The building was over 400 feet from the nearest road in an area along the bluff that was inaccessible to fire apparatus because of the steep, narrow, and icy condition of the driveway. ....
