Axon, formerly TASER International, sells body cameras for police officers. The Syracuse Police Department is using Axon s pilot program, which provided the department with 100 body cameras for a one-year free trial. The police union wants officers to be paid to wear the cameras going forward.SYR

Syracuse, N.Y. More than half of the officers in the Syracuse Police Department have been outfitted with body-worn cameras, including all the officers who have regular contact with the public, Chief Kenton Buckner said today.
Mayor Ben Walsh said the deployment of those cameras fulfills one of his promises for police reform outlined last year. ....

Syracuse, N.Y. Blueprint 15, the not-for-profit organization tasked with redeveloping Syracuse’s 15th Ward, received a $1 million grant to help keep people in their homes and stave off evictions.
The money comes from Enterprise Community Partners, which distributes money won in settlements by the state Attorney General to community projects.
The money will be used specifically in the 15th Ward area, which includes housing in the shadow of Interstate I-81 near downtown. It’s an effort to promote housing stability and prevent displacement in that neighborhood. ....
