Editorial | Why not CARICOM-Cuba biotech partnership?

This month is the 48th anniversary of the move by Michael Manley, Forbes Burnham, Eric Williams and Errol Barrow to establish diplomatic relations with Fidel Castro’s Cuba. That decision by the leaders of Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados was marked on December 8 by a virtual summit between the heads of government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Expectedly, the coronavirus pandemic was high on their agenda.
The conference’s final statement declared CARICOM’s “will” to maintain its medical cooperation with Cuba and, in that regard, recognised Havana’s contribution to the region, especially with “its valuable human resources which were added to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic”. ....

UWI professor explains why COVID-19 vaccines were approved quickly

With growing scepticism about the rapid approval of COVID-19 vaccines, Immunologist and Chairman of the University of the West Indies (UWI) COVID-19 task force, Professor Clive Landis, has moved to explain the rationale for the speed at which the vaccines are being approved.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, resulting in the launch of vaccine programmes in the United States and parts of Europe.
But with the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccines, comparisons have arisen regarding the length of time it took for previous vaccines took to be developed. ....

Vaccines or not, masks will remain for a while—Professor

Even with the emergence of vaccines, the public should not expect to step away from mask-wearing and other COVID precautions in the near future.
Jamaican doctor and professor, Peter Figueroa, warned the COVID-19 vaccines despite early results being encouraging still had far too many unknown quantities with regard to its overall effectiveness.
“The vaccines are not a silver bullet, we still need the non-pharmaceutical measures, the mask and the hand hygiene, the physical distancing and avoiding crowds, especially indoors,” said Figueroa while addressing the University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Forum on COVID-19 Vaccination yesterday. ....

Region urged to address 'myths' about COVID-19 vaccines

December 19, 2020
Local and regional experts are warning Caribbean leaders that they will have a major task on their hands to encourage their population to take the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available here.
The issue of COVID-19 vaccination came up for discussion during the University of the West Indies (UWI) Vice-Chancellor’s Forum on Friday.
While agreeing that concerns about the vaccine were genuine, the health officials stressed that a lot of the information now circulating on social media was nothing but myths that should be dispelled.
Karen Josiah, Head of the School of Nursing at the UWI 5-Island Campuses, said she believed public health officials will have a hard time convincing residents to take the vaccine because of the myths and beliefs. ....

With COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out in many countries around the world, experts in the research and treatment of deadly viruses in the Caribbean say strongly-held myths could threaten the take up of the vaccine in the region.
The view that vaccines cause autism, make men sterile and are developed to destroy the black race are some of the myths that should be addressed before the roll out of the vaccine in the region expected next year, the experts say.
“As health care workers we need to be made aware of these myths so that we can dispel them and encourage the population to take up the vaccine,” said Karen Josiah, nurse educator and head of the School of the Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus. ....
