Cleveland County School Board hires new attorney

Cleveland County School Board hires new attorney
The decision, made during the January meeting, was not without controversy.
After a lengthy discussion, five members approved the hiring of Sink Law Firm while four voted against.
A husband-and-wife team, Sink Law Firm appears online as a Charlotte company, though Jonathan Sink told Gaston County Commissioners a year ago that they were moving to Belmont. He was being hired as Gaston County’s attorney at the time. Sink bought a house in Belmont in May 2020.
Last month Leigha Sink, Jonathan’s wife and fellow attorney, told Cleveland School Board members that their family was moving to Shelby where she would be the primary attorney for the board.  ....

Teachers, parents, voice concerns and praises of new school board

Every regular meeting of the Cleveland County Board of Education features a time for the public to voice their thoughts or concerns. Usually, comments come in groups of two or three, but on Monday 19 people signed up to speak.
The sheer volume of commenters required the board to extend the public participation portion of the meeting from the usual 15-minute period to nearly an hour.
Speakers came prepared with printed letters and petitions to read or speeches to give.
At issue for most is the new board majority and its perceived rush to return students to full-time instruction as the coronavirus pandemic worsens in the community.   ....

School board not ready to discuss Ten Commandments yet

When the board met earlier this week, neither item was on the agenda.
The reason, according to board chairman Robert Queen, is because the board is not yet ready to tackle those issues.
I expect the attorney selection committee to have a recommendation for the board at the meeting on the 25th, said Queen in an email to
The Shelby Star. Display of the Ten Commandments is still with the Policy Committee that has not had time to meet yet.  There is no deadline for them to report.
The latter issue has become a hot-button one of late, even drawing attention from national organizations focused on religious freedom. ....

A North Carolina school board is exploring the possibility of putting Ten Commandments displays near the entrances at each of its school buildings, a possibility that has upset a secular legal group.
The Cleveland County School Board first discussed the idea at its Dec. 14 board meeting, drawing support and criticism in the last week from opposing national First Amendment legal groups.
During the December meeting, board member Ron Humphries made a motion to prepare, or have prepared, a policy requiring the display of the Ten Commandments . in a prominent place at or near the main entrance of all of our campuses.   ....
