Petition asks board to reconsider returning to full-time instruction
More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Cleveland County Board of Education to reconsider its decision to send some of the county s youngest students back to school this month.
In December the school board voted 8-1 for a plan to send all prekindergarten through fourth-grade students back to five days of instruction following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
With coronavirus case counts climbing to a critical point, some have now expressed concerns with that plan. A petition created by Amanda Buchanan, media specialist at Shelby Intermediate School and parent to a fourth-grader, and shared on change.org has garnered more than 2,500 signatures in less than a week. ....

Some Cleveland County residents could get a COVID-19 vaccine soon

The Cleveland County Health Department announced a new plan on Wednesday for when COVID-19 vaccines could be available for some residents.
Last week, the Health Department announced it could be months before a majority of Cleveland County residents would be able to receive a vaccination for COVID-19. Now, after consulting the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, that framework has changed.
Here are five things to know about COVID-19 vaccine distribution in the county:
Supplies are still limited
Because vaccine supplies are currently limited, distribution will be rolled out in phases.
The Health Department and the county are developing a mass vaccination plan starting later in January, starting with the oldest people in the community. ....

Diverse congregations looks to lead a change in Sunday culture

Though segregation legally ended more than 50 years ago, an unofficial divide remains in the pews of many churches across the country.
Bishop Marcus Strong with Destiny Life Center in Shelby said he and his congregation hope to be an example of a change in culture.
Strong says Destiny Life Center members are diverse and offer a look at unity that can be achieved when racial stigmas are checked at the church door.
“Every Sunday we’re doing something in regards to racial reconciliation, peace and harmony,” he said in the weeks and months of protests across the country.
Their focus on unity did not prompt them to shy away from calling out racial injustice during protests that followed the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. They also attended a Cleveland County Board of Commissioners meeting to show support of removing the Confederate monument on the old court square in Shelby. ....
