A Short Break In Victoria's Hidden Goldfields towns

Australian Traveller
A short break in Victoria s hidden Goldfields towns
28 June 2021 . BY Imogen Eveson
A rich art, music and epicurean culture adds another layer of interest to the compelling old Goldfields towns of Castlemaine, Maldon and their surrounds.
On a sunny Sunday evening in early autumn it’s hard to imagine many places I’d rather be than at the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine. There’s a band playing in its rambling back garden (home to Love Shack Brewing Co.), casting all-round good vibes to a laid-back audience of friends and young families.
The Art Deco facade at the Theatre Royal ....

'I think Archie would be pleased': 100 years of our most famous portrait prize and my almost 50 years watching it evolve

In 2008, when I first visited Canberra’s newly opened National Portrait Gallery, my first response was an overwhelming sense of déjà vu. I knew many of those paintings. They had once hung on the walls of the Art Gallery of New South Wales as part of the annual Archibald Prize exhibition, or been seen in the Salon des Refusés home to the best of the rejects.
Over 49 years I have seen the Archibald from both the inside, as a curator, and the outside as a critic. My first Archibald was in 1972, the year Clifton Pugh won with his portrait of Gough Whitlam. Along with other art history students, I had never been especially interested in this festival of popular culture, but as the recently appointed most junior of all curators my job was to administer the prize. ....

When the British battleship HMS Ramillies sailed into Sydney Harbour on March 14, 1940, the crew included an 18-year-old midshipman, Philip Mountbatten (also known as Philip, Prince of Greece).
It would be first of more than 20 visits to these shores for Prince Philip — who died on Friday — with or without his wife, the Queen.
The Ramillies stayed in the Garden Island dockyards for a couple of weeks while the high-profile young sailor enjoyed the hospitality of posh Sydney families and a welter of dances, parties and outdoor sports. ....

Outback NSW travel guide and things to do: Nine must-do highlights

1. THE ONE HIGHWAY
Only a few months ago, the Silver City Highway between Broken Hill and Tibooburra remained one of the last two unsealed major roads in NSW. Now, with the final dirt sections of the highway bituminised, a new, safer and more reliable 332-kilometre NSW outback touring route for vehicles of all kinds has been opened up. The highway, named after Broken Hill s nom de plume, extends a further 296 kilometres south to the border of Victoria at Mildura, creating a new gateway to the outback through NSW and near to the Queensland border.
2. THE ONE TOWN

Tucked away in the far north-west corner of NSW, 1182 kilometres from Sydney, is Tibooburra, the state s remotest township. Although a sign as you enter Tibooburra registers the population as 150, the real number of people in this one-main-street-town is about half that. But that still makes it the largest town in this part of NSW. Stock up on supplies at the Corner Country Store, right on the main ....
