Nearly £20m of fraud prevented in 2020 by banking industry-funded police unit


Detective Chief Inspector Gary Robinson, head of the DCPCU, said: “By working closely with the banking industry and other partners, we are continuing cracking down on those responsible for coronavirus-related fraud, with multiple arrests in recent weeks of individuals believed to be involved in coronavirus vaccine scams.”
Katy Worobec, managing director of economic crime at UK Finance, said: “The successes with social media and telecommunication partners show what can be achieved when all sectors collaborate in a united front against this threat.
“We would urge the public to follow the advice of our Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign to stay safe from scams, and always take a moment to stop and think before parting with their money or information.” ....

Trust us to deal with hate crimes, LGBT police officers urge community

With four in five anti-LGBT+ hate crimes going unreported, three queer police officers are urging victims to trust the system and come forward with their experiences.
, overall hate crime levels topped 100,000 for the first time last year, the highest number since records began. Homophobic offences jumped by a shocking 19 per cent and the biggest proportionate rise was seen in transgender hate crimes, which quadrupled between 2014-15 and 2019-20.
The result is that as many as one in five LGBT+ people (21 per cent) have been victim to a hate crime in the last 12 months – but the vast majority don’t report it to police. Younger people are particularly reluctant, with many feeling the police wouldn’t take them seriously if they did. ....
