Dr Helen Cargill Thompson died in October 2020 leaving a treasure trove of contemporary art, books and silver in her family home in the West End of Glasgow. The arts patron left her house and its furniture to the National Trust for Scotland upon her death. Her vast collections of contemporary art has been auctioned off all with the intent of continuing her legacy of helping future generations. ....
NOT by coincidence, this week sees a remarkable double anniversary, namely the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901, and the 110th anniversary of the opening in Glasgow of the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry. While the former is commemorated in its home city and has left behind notable landmarks, it is the latter exhibition which I believe is the more important as it left an indelible mark on the Scottish nation. Glasgow had already held an International Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry in 1888 which was the largest ever held in Scotland. It attracted nearly 6 million people and left Glasgow one notable landmark – the beautiful Doulton Fountain, now at Glasgow Green, which remains the world’s largest ceramic fountain. ....

The item, not seen in public since 1901, belonged to James Stewart, half-brother of Mary Queen of Scots and dates back to the 1540s. It showed his position as Commendator of Melrose and Kelso Abbeys, which were bestowed on him by the king.
