But National Popcorn Day? Come on. Squirrel Appreciation Day - really? Does the planet absolutely have to have a World Nutella Day? Most of the really daft ones, of course, are dreamt up by marketing firms flogging a particular product or attention-seeking so-called influencers. (World Nutella Day, if you are interested, was started in 2007 by an American blogger and now, on February 5, people all over the world celebrate it by sharing their recipes and pictures on social media.)

Volunteering can help support vulnerable people and be of great personal benefit to the volunteers. Like Lilian, Theresa and Hayden have found volunteering – particularly during lockdown - a huge boost to their own mental health. Theresa’s third year at university came to an abrupt halt last March and she found herself back home, with a ‘suffocating lack of purpose’. “I had no exams, six months before I could continue my course and no idea of what to do until then,” she says. “It raised a whole host of negative thoughts.” Theresa started volunteering for Afreshe, a charity which works with children, young people and adults of African backgrounds, helping them to build self-esteem and engage with local communities.

Christmas cheer sent with love from Glasgow schools to care homes

Notre Dame primary school pupils who are in the schools charity committee and were involved in the pen pal care home project.
