For many years it has been a tradition in the middle school where I teach to hold Derby festivities on the Thursday of Derby week. Often we have also accompanied those activities with music. I have recruited various students and colleagues to play instruments and sing songs with me before the 7th and 8th grades held our own version of the Oaks and Derby races. There are always a couple of teachers willing to play with me, one of whom is a very talented member of our faculty. He is a Black American, a native of Haiti, and I consider him my friend. ....
