YouthBuild to Offer Brunch and Blessing Bags

Students from Lewis and Clark Community College’s YouthBuild AmeriCorps program have been partnering with the Alton Salvation Army recently to help restock their food pantry and serve hot meals. There is now a plan in the works to step it up a notch and host a “Brunch and Blessing Bags” event.

She credits L&C Adult Education student Alexandra Thompson-Blockton for her work organizing this event. The event was supposed to have been held last month but was postponed due to illness. It will now be held tomorrow, May 21. ....

With college costs mounting and student debt remaining a hot topic of conversation, public opinion on four-year colleges has begun to shift, as people contemplate whether they are in fact the only or best option for all students. An estimated 8.7 million undergraduates enrolled in public, two-year colleges during the 2016–17 academic year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. A 2019 study from TD Ameritrade found 36 percent of Gen Z students considered attending a community college before a four-year college, while 21 percent considered attending a community college instead of a four-year college. ....

ALTON Alyson Haegele and Bryce Christner of Alton High School have been named the Students of the Month for April by the Alton Godfrey Rotary Club.
Haegele, the daughter of Scott and Holly Haegele of Godfrey, is a member of the Alton High School National Honor Society. She currently has a 4.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, which places her in the top 10 percent of the senior class. She has been enrolled in several honors and dual credit classes during her time at AHS.
She is the starting pitcher for the softball team and was a cheerleader for the football season during her junior and senior seasons. As a freshman, she also played volleyball. Additionally, she has been a member of the Biology Club, the Physics Club and the Spanish Club. ....

Muny Band Season Begins Soon | Alton Daily News

The Alton Municipal Band kicks off its 131
st consecutive season on June 13 at Haskell Park. The free concerts feature dozens of local musicians with a different theme and song list each week. The Sunday performances at Haskell Park begin at 7pm.
For now, the Thursday shows at Riverview Park are on hold. But band director David Drillinger tells The Big Z that could change later in the season.

Spectators are also encouraged to spread out and observe other public health precautions. Open rehearsals have begun in the Trimpe Building at Lewis and Clark Community College, and anyone wishing to audition can contact the group at [email protected] ....
