Floor collapses during massive house party near UGA, dozens injured
    ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, Georgia (WGCL) Athens-Clarke County Fire responded to a shocking scene early Friday morning after a massive house party led to a floor collapse.
The department was notified of an incident on Magnolia Bluff Drive near UGA around 1:00 a.m. When they received information on the unusually large number of people inside the home, the response was upgraded to include an Engine, Rescue truck, and a Battalion Chief.
Athens-Clarke County Police were already on the scene when fire crews arrived, working to remove victims from within the structure. National EMS ambulances were also on the scene, and the nature of the emergency led to another fire response upgrade with an additional Rescue truck and Battalion Chief requested. ....

Athens police blotter: Burger King employee steals credit card info, parking sign stolen and more


Man steals parking sign
A man stole a “no parking” street sign and attempted to put it in a dumpster on North Lumpkin Street on April 3, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report.
When police signaled emergency blue lights and turned towards the dumpster, the man started running away. Police chased the man approximately one block until he stopped and said he was “done running,” according to the report.
The man, who was under 21, appeared to be intoxicated. He said his friends told him to grab the sign and “take it somewhere,” according to the report.
The man was taken to Clarke County Jail for public intoxication, underage drinking and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, according to the report. ....

Athens-Clarke police chief Spruill not offered Frederick, Md. job


Spruill and Pittsburgh s Jason Lando were the two finalists out of 35 candidates the city considered.
Mayor Michael O’Connor announced his selection on a live video feed on the city’s website, saying it was approved unanimously by the five aldermen on the council during a closed session earlier in the day.
Spruill, chief in Athens for about two years, is a veteran of about 33 years in law enforcement. Spruill grew up in Richmond, Va., and once served 27 years on the Alexandria, Va., police force.
When he became a finalist for the Frederick job, Spruill told The Frederick News-Post that the “pandemic has found him wanting to live closer to his family. Normally, he’d hop on a plane to see his fiancé and grandchildren, but COVID-19 has made that option less desirable.” ....

Athens police fatally shoot man

Athens-Clarke County Police shot and killed Timothy Daniel Statham, 37, around 9:17 a.m. on Thursday after attempting to stop him while he drove a vehicle stolen out of Jackson County, according to press releases from the ACCPD and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
As police followed the vehicle, it left the roadway in the area of Newton Bridge Road and Fritz Mar Lane, and Statham fled on foot into the woods. Officers set up a perimeter around Statham and attempted to negotiate for his surrender “for an extended period of time,” according to the ACCPD release. ....
