Join us for Irish Sea Crossings and Irish Sea Stories, on Wednesday April 28th at 4pm, two exciting talks presented in partnership with the Ports Past and Present Project by Prof Claire Connolly and Dr James Smith. These talks will investigate the Irish Sea and its place in the shared Irish and British imagination. Ports, Past and Present, funded by the European Regional Development Fund via the Ireland Wales Co-operation Programme, revisits the cultural heritage of the Irish Sea’s crossings and finds new ways of telling Irish Sea stories.

(Oxford University Press, 2020), Ireland is an island that forgot itself . UCC’s Claire Connolly has identified how Ireland’s relationship with its seas, coasts and ports has long been uncomfortable and defined by feelings of unease, dizziness and sea-sickness. It s one shaped by the violence of empire and a political culture which attaches primary importance to agriculture, land and land ownership.
