The La Jolla Parks & Beaches board lent its support July 26 to a planned nightly parking prohibition at the Windansea Beach lot.
A proposal put in motion by the city of San Diego looks to install signs prohibiting parking between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. However, LJP&B will recommend that parking be barred only from 1 to 4 a.m.
LJP&B President Claudia Baranowski said during the board’s online meeting that a memo was sent to certain community groups, LJP&B among them, seeking input on overnight parking in certain areas along the coast. The only one within LJP&B’s jurisdiction was the 16-space parking lot at Windansea. ....

Funding for La Jolla shoreline parks gets support at budget town hall; money for police draws mixed views

Care for La Jolla’s parks and open spaces, as well as those across San Diego City Council District 1, took center stage at Councilman Joe LaCava’s budget town hall May 12.
The online meeting was intended to collect feedback on Mayor Todd Gloria’s $1.73 billion draft budget. It was one of two scheduled town halls; the second was held the morning of May 15.
Requests for rangers, maintenance of existing facilities and capital improvement projects in shoreline parks were raised in hopes that they will be funded in the 2021-22 fiscal year that starts July 1. There are more than 42,000 acres of park assets in San Diego, including almost 27,000 acres of open space and aquatic areas, according to the draft budget. The plan proposes a reduction of just over $69,000 for the Parks & Recreation Department. ....

After years of planning, community reviews, a redesign of certain features and COVID-19-related delays, the Scripps Park restroom facility needs one more thing to stay on track for fall completion: a waiver of the summer construction moratorium.
After the La Jolla Parks & Beaches group voted to write a letter to the city of San Diego supporting such a waiver in March, the La Jolla Community Planning Association followed suit at its May 6 meeting. ....

The seating of a new member to the La Jolla Parks & Beaches group is normally a simple, maybe 90-second process. But when it came to seating the Rev. Tim Seery during the board’s April 26 meeting, there were debates, lengthy discussion and multiple votes.
To be eligible for membership, a candidate must be at least 18; live, work or own property in La Jolla or represent an organization that does business in La Jolla; and attend three meetings in the previous six months. Those who do are put on an eligible list. ....
