South-east drizzle to continue as central Queensland braces for flooding

Drizzling rain was expected to linger in south-east Queensland and intensify at the weekend, as an emergency alert for flooding was issued for central parts of the state.
The south-eastern rain would continue on Wednesday and Thursday, ease on Friday, intensify at the weekend and continue to hang around during next week, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Light rain was forecast to linger in Brisbane for the rest of the week.

Meteorologist Ricus Lombard said an upper low-pressure system was responsible for the wet weather in the region, which was expected to move offshore on Saturday. ....

BREAKING: Sapphire residents told to move to higher ground

Residents in Sapphire have been advised to move to higher ground with major flooding expected as Retreat Creek continues to rapidly rise.
One resident in the area reported recording 254mm of rain in three hours. 
An Emergency Alert was issued by Central Highlands Regional Council at 4.44am on Wednesday for residents in Sapphire.
According to the alert, Retreat Creek was rising rapidly due to heavy rainfall, and major flooding was expected.
Properties in low-lying areas were likely to be impacted.
Council advised residents to warn neighbours, secure belongings and move to higher ground now.
 
 
The Bureau of Meteorology had recorded the height of Retreat Creek at Sapphire as 9.8m and rising at 6.52am. ....

Tributes as Irvine firefighter and trade union man passes away


Michael O’Mahony, born August 23, 1942, passed away aged 78 on Tuesday, December 1.
Michael started as an apprentice painter 1958 in Glasgow and married his wife Marie in February 1963 and moved to stay in Irvine in 1965.
He was father of two children, Marie and Michael, who he doted on.
He joined the Fire Service in 1966 starting in Ardrossan Station continuing in Irvine North and before retiring from Kilmarnock Station with the rank of Station Officer in 1996 undertook staff training at Cowcaddens Station
He was awarded the MBE in 1995 for all the good work undertaken throughout his career.
It was presented to him by the Queen at Buckingham Palace, which he was immensely proud of. Colleagues all agreed he thoroughly deserved such an honour. ....
