Support for young carers across Aberdeenshire

The strategy builds on the first Aberdeenshire Young Carer Strategy 2018 to 2020 and benefits from the input of young people in setting out how young carers will be supported over the next two years.
A young carer is anyone under the age of 18, or 18 if still at school, who cares for a family member or friend due to illness, disability, mental health or addiction. Caring can be physical, emotional or practical support. There are many young carers across Aberdeenshire and a caring role if unsupported can have a huge impact on a carer’s health and wellbeing. Young carers may find themselves excluded from personal and social opportunities including time in education. This may inhibit their development, ambitions, involvement in hobbies and potential to achieve. ....

Remote learning welcomed by Aberdeen teachers' union

An Aberdeen teachers’ union has welcomed the decision to postpone the return to school after the Christmas holidays and to use remote learning.
Nicola Sturgeon announced that schools would return on January 11, instead of January 5, with online learning in place until January 18.
The first minister said schools would only be open from January 5 for the children of key workers and those deemed most vulnerable.
Ron Constable, joint secretary of Aberdeen EIS (Educational Institute of Scotland) local association, Aberdeen’s largest teacher’s trade union, welcomed the move and called for remote learning to be extended beyond January 18 if necessary. ....

A north-east council has created new leaflets with advice for parents and carers.
Aberdeenshire Council’s educational psychology service has been working with colleagues from NHS Grampian, Police Scotland and Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action among others to support promoting safe parent/carer-child relationships.
As part of its work, it’s developed leaflets designed to be a helpful resource for schools and others involved.
These include different topics such as adult role models, relaxation, babies brains, self-regulation, supporting anger, emotion coaching, positive thinking and loss/bereavement, as well as several others. ....
