In a 6-2 vote Tuesday night, Guilford County Board of Education approved universal mask requirements inside GCS buildings for the 2021-2022 school year.Click on the video player for more headlines from WXII 12 News.Board members also voted in favor of implementing mandatory COVID-19 testing for students and staff who are not fully vaccinated who also participate in athletic and high-risk extracurricular activities.Guilford County Schools also approved collecting and maintaining vaccination status for all district employees, student athletes and coaches, and students who participate in high-risk extracurricular activities. “We had to make a decision to ensure that schools remain open that is our job, we don’t want another situation where students are sitting home experiencing months and months of remote learning,” said Superintendent Dr. Sharon Contreras after the meeting. First case of U.K. coronavirus variant identified in Triad

The first case in the Triad of the more transmissible U.K. coronavirus strain was identified in Guilford County on Wednesday.
The CDC does random surveillance testing on COVID-19 test samples to investigate potential variant strains, according to a press release from the Guilford County Division of Public Health. This was how the U.K. COVID-19 variant, known as B.1.1.7, was identified.
This is the second known case of this variant in the state of North Carolina. The first was reported in Mecklenburg County on Saturday, the Charlotte News and Observer reported. This variant has been detected in 22 states since Jan. 22, according to the CDC. ....

GUILFORD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ISSUE NEW PUBLIC HEALTH RULE Immediately Effective to Mitigate COVID-19 Spread and Ensure Compliance of Governorâs Executive Order
GUILFORD COUNTY - As COVID-19 cases surge and hospitalizations continue to increase, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners who also serve as the county Public Health Board met Wednesday, December 9 in a Special Meeting to vote and adopt a new rule to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 throughout Guilford County. As of the date of adoption the county-wide public health rule has an immediate effective date. The newly adopted rule serves as a tool to enforce the Stateâs existing orders for crowding and reduction of potential exposures in settings where people are not always wearing their face coverings to prevent more cases, increased hospitalizations and more deaths. ....
