Body Shop at Home helping women and children fleeing domestic violence

WHEN women and children escape domestic abuse to find safety in Bolton’s Fortalice refuge they sometimes bring few possessions with them.
“Often, they just throw a few things into a binbag and escape the best way they can,” explained Fortalice chief executive Gill Smallwood.
So when they arrive at the refuge, they often need lots of support, including help with clothes and toiletries.
Now, a local businesswoman is finding a way to fund those vital toiletries for all the refuge’s new residents.

Inspirational women celebrated at Inspire Awards 2020

INSPIRATIONAL women who have made a difference to others were celebrated in a glitzy online ceremony.
The sixth annual Inspire Awards had to be staged virtually this year because of the pandemic, but preparations are underway to hold a reception for the winners when it is safe to do so.
Staged at the University of Bolton, the awards lost none of the red carpet feel, with some of the country most high profile women attending, including Patron, Baroness Trish Morris of Bolton and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi.
Baroness Morris said:“It’s testament to the spirit of the sixth Inspire Awards that we are able to celebrate together, on this virtual platform. ....

How Fortalice and police have worked to keep in touch with domestic abuse victims during pandemic

CORONAVIRUS rules have made it hard for victims of domestic abuse as they have been trapped at home with their perpetrators.
And Bolton domestic abuse charity Fortalice, which manages a refuge, and police, have had to work hard this year to keep in touch with victims.
Staying connected with people suffering violence at home has been very difficult amid two national lockdowns since March, and many other strict rules enforced in between in bids to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
Fortalice chief executive Gill Smallwood said: “During Covid we have worked in many different ways trying to ensure victims have a route in for support. I think it’s difficult for victims to come forward but I think they have done that through Webchat. ....
