IT IS now official: the government will no longer award tenders to contractors who delayed water projects or delivered shoddy works.
This follows a series of reports of works performed below standard and others undertaken for longer than agreed in the contracts. Most if not all of the culprits are indigenous firms.
Speaking after an inspection tour on implementation of water projects here yesterday, Deputy Water Minister Maryprisca Mahundi said ‘enough is enough’ with firms that impair the government’s efforts to relieve Tanzanians, mainly women and children, the burden of having to carry buckets of water for long distances on a daily basis. ....

PERMANENT Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Gerald Kusaya yesterday urged leaders of farmer’s cooperative unions to find alternative funding sources to repay loans instead of selling properties.

PS Kusaya made the remarks in Kilimanjaro Region during his three days official visit whereas among other things, he discovered that most of the farmer’s cooperative unions were struggling to repay loans borrowed from banks and financial institutions.

AS part of efforts to conserve Mount Kilimanjaro, Tigo Tanzania launched a tree planting initiative called ‘Tigo Green for Kili’ project with an initial target of planting 10,000 trees last week.
Addressing journalists during the unveiling of the project in Hai District of Kilimanjaro Region, Tigo Tanzania Northern Zone Director, Henry Kinabo said the telecommunications company is sponsoring the tree planting campaign to protect the Africa’s highest mountain. “We felt that there is need to do more in the Kilimanjaro Region by planting trees,” said Kinabo whose company also sponsors Kilimanjaro Marathon annual event. ....

THE government has embarked on construction of markets at various border posts to facilitate trade with neighboring countries and guarantee market for farmers’ crops.

The facilities currently constructed at the Hororo border post in Kilimanjaro Region, Kagunga in Kigoma Region and the 3.5bn/- market at Nyakanazi in Kagera Region will also include zonal markets.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made the statement in the National Assembly adding the market at Kagunga in Kigoma Region will facilitate trade between Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda while the Nyakanazi market will ease trading activities between Tanzania, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). ....
