Marvin Guy hires new attorneys in capital murder case
During a short hearing on Monday afternoon, the defendant in a 2014 Killeen capital murder case officially hired new attorneys, which could delay a jury trial further.
Marvin Louis Guy, 56, has been held in the Bell County Jail since being booked on May 10, 2014, on four capital felony charges.
Innocence Project of Texas Executive Director Mike Ware will be first chair on Guyâs case, with Justin A. Moore, a criminal defense attorney from Dallas, as second chair.
Guy is accused of shooting a Killeen Police Department detective, who later died, during a no-knock raid on Guyâs residence on Circle M Drive in 2014. Guy has claimed self-defense, saying that he did not know it was police entering his residence. ....

Family still searching for answers in 1992 Killeen homicide

Nearly three decades after their mother was found brutally killed in north Killeen, three brothers are on a mission to find answers in the unsolved homicide case.
âWe want to know, before we die â Who did it, and why?â said Danny Koch, one of the sons of Fannie Ruth Koch Cockrum, who was found dead in the consignment store she owned at the corner of Gilmer Street and York Avenue in north Killeen on April 9, 1992.
To mark the 29th answer anniversary of her death, Koch placed 29 roses on her grave Friday at the Killeen City Cemetery on Rancier Avenue.

KISD names Teachers of the Year

An elementary teacher known for bringing space science to her kindergarten students and a middle school coach who motivates students and teachers alike are Killeen ISD Teachers of the Year.
Palo Alto Middle School coach Elise Kea is the Secondary Teacher of the Year. Lisa Stewart of Skipcha Elementary School is the Elementary Teacher of the Year.
The school district combined virtual technology with surprise-at-the-front door tactics to reveal the pair Tuesday evening.
Both expressed shock when they heard their names announced during the virtual ceremony, then found guests outside their houses bearing gifts.
The school districtâs 52 campus Teachers of the Year watched from their homes through Zoom conferenceing as KISDâs annual Teacher of the Year unfolded in a very different format. ....

COVID-19 claims life of second Killeen educator, KEA says

A Killeen Independent School District high school teacher died from COVID-19, according to a social media post from the Killeen Educators Association.
David âScottâ Dumler, 55, a Killeen High School history teacher with over two decades of teaching in KISD under his belt, succumbed to complications from COVID-19, according to the Killeen Educators Association.
âEven as antimaskers rally at the Bell County Courthouse we have received a report of a longtime Killeen High School coach passing from COVID-19,â Killeen Educators Association posted Sunday. âWe mourn his passing even as we continue to advocate for safety during the still active pandemic. We continue to strongly support the districtâs decision to continue its mask mandate.â ....
