Groton A 161-acre land parcel off Noank Ledyard Road in Mystic is in line to be the town’s latest open space acquisition. The town recently received a $352,000 grant from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection s Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Program to purchase the vacant parcel, called the Wolfebrook property, which is bordered to the north by the Fields of Fire complex and to the south by Regatta Circle and Chelsea Way. The town and the Groton Open Space Association also are slated to contribute to the purchase price. The state announcement notes that the property will provide a link between town-owned open space to the north and south and will provide for nearly 200 acres of protected land between Route 1 and I-95. ....
Groton The Groton Open Space Association has purchased the 104-acre Sheep Farm South parcel on the corner of Flanders Road and Route 1, marking a long-held preservation goal that fits into the larger picture for open space in Groton. The property abuts the existing 63-acre Sheep Farm property on Hazelnut Hill Road and is across Route 1 from the 75-acre Merritt Family Forest, where people can connect to the 6-mile Cross-Town Trail, GOSA President Joan Smith said. The acquisition fits into a larger greenbelt that the association has been working on for years, starting with efforts more than 50 years ago to raise the matching funds to preserve the Haley Farm. ....
Published March 04. 2021 8:32PM I am so glad that residents of the City of Groton will have a choice this year in the election of mayor. I am going to cast my vote for Aundré Bumgardner in the Democratic city primary on March 8 and urge my neighbors to do the same. I met Aundré several years ago when he volunteered at Haley Farm to help with trail maintenance and cleanup and reached out to the Groton Open Space Association to work on their open spaces. Aundré is energetic, thoughtful, progressive, open-minded and a staunch environmentalist, qualities I think certainly qualify and distinguish him for the job. He will ensure that Groton has the resilience it needs to adapt to the future impacts of climate change, open space for passive recreation, and policies that reduce waste. He will work to create fiscally responsible, transparent city government. I am excited to cast my vote for him and urge you to do so too. ....
Wash away 2020’s woes with an icy plunge 1/1/20 :: REGION :: STAND ALONE :: New Years revelers, and runners, splash in the waters of Fishers Island Sound at Esker Point Beach in Noank Wednesday, January 1, 2020. The run and dip, in its 51st year, started as an informal gathering of friends of former Boston Marathon champion Amby Burfoot. The group, which numbered over 100, started at the statue of former Boston Marathon champion Johnny Kelley in Mystic and proceeds along Noank Road at a pace friendly to even the slowest participant to end with the brief plunge a the beach. Fort Hill Brook tumbles over a waterfall at the Sheep Farm preserve in Groton. (Steve Fagin) Mountain laurel surrounds Fort Hill Brook at the Sheep Farm preserve in Groton. (Betsy Graham) The Sheep Farm preserve in Groton offers a quiet place to rest. (Betsy Graham) Published December 10. 2020 9:49AM | Updated December 10. 2020 4:22PM By Steve Fagin Anyone crisscrossing Groton by car might think that pavement dominates a town containing so many housing subdivisions, apartment complexes, shopping centers, factories and office buildings, not to mention an interstate highway, airport and submarine base. Those on foot, however, can hike for miles on connected trails, as our small group confirmed last week. ....
