Right now, many Christians are observing Advent, a time dedicated to reflection on the coming of Christ.
“Advent” derives from the Latin term “adventus,” which means “coming” or “arrival.” In practice, though, everyone knows that Advent is when you get ready for Christmas, and that means less prayerful reflection and more hunting for gifts. Of course, that makes this season the perfect time for a hearty invective against consumerism, something we could all afford to hear more often.
The less obvious criticism, however, is that our Advents have gotten theologically lopsided. Focusing almost entirely on the First Coming, aka Christmas, we (and, by “we,” I mean Christians) have failed to attend to the promise of the Second Coming. ....
