Donna Lee Tompkins, 87, of Jamestown, ND died on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Ave Maria Village.
Donna was born January 21, 1934, in Jamestown, to Lawrence and Hannah (Westby) Stoehr. She was raised in the house that her dad built, educated in Jamestown, and graduated in 1952. She worked in medical records and as a receptionist/bookkeeper at Jamestown Hospital for four years, then part time until 1963. She met Gilford Tompkins, a young farmer from Pingree, at a dance in Eldridge; they dated for two years and married November 8, 1954 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown. They were blessed with five children and raised them on their farm near Pingree. Donna was gracious and kind, and always considered others before herself. She will be remembered for her good cooking, baking, and being a wonderful hostess for family, friends, neighbors and her high school reunion guests. Donna was an avid gardener, growing abundant vegetables for canning and meals. Her yard and flower g ....

In our small bubble of five, my family reserves mealtime for the most serious and profound conversations. For instance, recently the discussion centred around how to open those flimsy produce bags at the grocery store when you can’t lick your finger. One of us even sheepishly admitted that she unconsciously tried licking her finger through her mask. That was when the young produce employee sidled up to her and asked if she would like some help. I piped in with a tried and true solution: rub the top of the bag vigorously between your palms and the sides almost always separate. Of course this conversation led to a related one – how to separate coffee filters. I wonder how many obscenities get muttered as we pick, pick, pick at the top of the clump trying to loosen just one. I immediately thought of those rubber finger tips the employees used to use in banks and offices – wouldn’t those work perfectly? Something to keep your eye out for as you browse yard ....

On this Christmas Day edition of Charlotte Talks, host Mike Collins reads a special poem he first learned about 25 years ago.
It was written by Minnesota actor and author Tom Haag for a Christmas program at his church. When Haag was asked to speak, he agonized over what to write. He couldn’t seem to come up with anything to say until the night before when it all came rushing out on one of those yellow legal pads.
The next day, he walked to the lectern to read what he had written.
The church was filled. But when Haag finished, he left the stage to stony silence. He thought that he had bombed. But actually, it struck a chord in the congregation a deep one. After a moment, the applause started, and built, and lingered. ....

The Christmas treats were delivered to Riverside House
Students and staff from Saddleworth School gave a little treat for residents of Riverside House by making and delivering Christmas party boxes, filled with turkey sandwiches, crisps, chocolates, home-made trifle complete with a Christmas cracker and Christmas card.

Mrs Reece, Mrs Butler and Mrs Brooks helped to organise the event and Year 11 pupils Harry Rushworth, Demi Cumming and Lily Wyatt delivered the gifts.
Riverside House is just 5 minutes from the school on the High Street with 42 elderly residents who live independently.

Mr John Broadbent lives there who was the school caretaker and then a School Governor. John is now the patron of the school. We normally invite elderly relatives and friends to a Senior Citizen’s party into school but as we were unable this year decided to make Christmas Tea Boxes. ....
