LOS ANGELES — California’s deadly Christmas was marked by pleas to stay away from holiday gatherings outside the home and indoor church services in what could be a make-or-break effort to curb a coronavirus surge that already has filled some hospitals well beyond normal capacity.
Festive gatherings with friends and family might be tempting after a year that has seen the pandemic take at least 23,635 lives and ravage the economy as much of the state remained under a stay-at-home order that has closed nonessential businesses. ....

NEWARK, N.J.  Tickets for Masses, virtual holiday concerts, video Christmas cards, and drive-by Nativity scenes: It s beginning to look a lot like a different sort of Christmas.
With COVID-19 contributing to the cancellation of Christmas pageants, caroling and some of the season s most familiar traditions, many parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark have found creative new ways to engage the faithful this Christmas.
At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey, every parish household received a gift bag hung on their front door. In it was a Nativity scene Christmas tree ornament, information about the parish and a heartfelt message from the pastor, Msgr. Ronald Rozniak. ....

Churches offer alternatives for holiday worship services during pandemic

JoAnn Horner, Our Lady of Fatima eucharistic minister, touches up her Christmas decorations at the church in Farrell. Horner, who has been decorating the church for 34 years, said she spends four to five hours on each section due to them being handmade. It took her about three weeks to finish decorating the church this year, covering the building inside and out with trees, wreaths, decorative baskets, ornaments and hand rails featuring real live pine roping. The decorations also feature a statue depicting the blessed mother that will be at the Farrell church for the entire month of December. “She brings a lot of blessings when she comes into your church,” Horner said. ....
