That’s no moon: veteran Apple designer unveils $1,799 Cell Alpha speaker Share this story Image: Syng Christopher Stringer, an ex-Apple designer who worked on everything from the HomePod to the original iPhone during his 22 year-stint at the company, has unveiled his new startup’s debut speaker. It’s called the Cell Alpha, a futuristic Death Star-shaped connected speaker with an emphasis on spatial audio. It costs $1,799, or $1,969 if you want the model with a floorstanding base. The Cell Alpha has woofers on its top and bottom arranged into a “force-balanced” configuration. These are paired with three mid-range drivers that are distributed around its equator, where they’re presumably joined by a small thermal exhaust port the Cell Alpha’s only known weakness. Jokes aside, Stringer’s company Syng claims this three-driver configuration (dubbed “The Triphone”) is able to project sound with “pinpoint accuracy” around a room. ....
Syng Cell Alpha sees ex-HomePod designer let loose in spatial audio Chris Davies - May 17, 2021, 10:06am CDT If you insist on your home speaker system being as eye-catching as it’s loud, good news: the Syng Cell Alpha has arrived, and what’s billed as “the world’s first Triphonic speaker” looks like little else in audio. Handiwork of former Apple designer Christopher Stringer – who worked on the HomePod, among other things – the startup’s first model aims to get an edge on spatial audio as surround sound music gains traction. It’s not the first to try that, of course. Amazon’s Echo Studio supports spatial audio – which now comes bundled with Amazon Music Unlimited at no extra cost – while Sony’s SRS-RA5000 has support for the company’s 360 Reality Audio format. ....
This high-end speaker is built to fill a room with sound thanks to multiple points of distribution on its globe-shaped design. You can combine the speaker with two additional units and place them around a room, as well, to provide an even more enveloping listening experience. The speaker operates via Syng Space, an app that lets you place sounds such as music from Spotify in certain corners of a living room. The app is currently only available in the Apple app store but will be available in the Google Play Store in summer 2021, according to Syng. Syng Cell Alpha price and release date ....
Hey folks. The hackers at DarkSide didnât mean to shut down our gas pipeline and trigger a panic. Theyâre a business, darn it. Helped by the US Congress, which refuses to mandate tough security standards. This is a special free edition of Plaintext. To read it every week, The Plain View If there is one word for Christopher Stringerâs 22-year career at Apple, it might be âunsung.â Though his name is on around 1,400 patents, the Australian-born and UK-raised designer was seldom heard of outside Cupertino. The one exception occurred not at a keynote appearance, but at a trial where he testified about a complicated patent dispute between his employer and Samsung. ....
