Attorney General to handle bus driver case

The Texas Attorney General s Office will prosecute the case of an Athens ISD bus driver charged with negligent homicide in a wreck that killed a 13-year-old boy.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office has been assigned the prosecution of Athens bus driver John Stevens, who faces trial for criminally negligent homicide and injury to a child.
Henderson County District Attorney Jenny Palmer has recused herself in the case of Stevens, who was at the wheel Jan. 25, 2019, dropping off students after school when the collision occurred.
At about 4 p.m., Athens Police Department reports said, the bus reached the railroad track, where it stopped, then proceed and went into the path of a westbound Union Pacific freight train. ....

ATHENS, Texas (KLTV) - The Henderson County District Attorney’s Office has recused itself in the case against the bus driver accused in the death of an Athens ISD student.
Jenny Palmer took over of John Franklin Stevens, 80, of the DA’s office in January. On Feb. 10, Palmer filed a motion to recuse, citing a conflict of interest. In the motion, she stated the attorney general’s office has agreed to prosecute the case. ....

ATHENS, Texas A judge has set a hearing date in the case of an Athens ISD bus driver charged in connection with the death of one child and injuries to another in 2019.
John Franklin Stevens, 80, of Mabank, who was driving a school bus when it was struck by a train in January 2019, is charged with criminally negligent homicide and injury to a child. He is out of jail on bond. ....
