The novel research was published in the journal Gut. The study, led by researchers at New York University College of Dentistry and Queen s University in Ontario, was conducted in mice with colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease marked by inflammation of the large intestine. Opioids, which are used to treat chronic pain in people with inflammatory bowel disease, relieve pain by targeting opioid receptors, including the mu-opioid receptor.
