Primary to decide levies, council candidates on Tuesday

After a high-turnout presidential election in November, a far smaller number of voters are expected to cast ballots in Tuesday s primary in partisan city council contests and on proposed township, village and school tax increases.
More than three in four registered voters in Stark County, more than 191,000 people, voted in November. That s almost certainly not going to happen Tuesday.
The last non-presidential primary took place in May 2019. The turnout then was less than 15%. Fewer than 36,500 voters cast ballots that year when there were where no countywide levy issues. That s the same situation this year.

Canton expands Wi-Fiber police surveillance system in northeast

CANTON – The city will continue its Wi-Fiber surveillance system expansion in northeast Canton.
City Council on Monday authorized the mayor or public safety director to enter a $108,150 contract with the Maryland-based Wi-Fiber LLC for the purchase and installation of 11 cameras and two license plate readers. The equipment will be mounted to eight poles, which each require an electric meter estimated to cost $18,400 total.
Canton Police Chief Jack Angelo, who called into the council meeting, said the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA) placed the poles for security cameras about a decade ago.
They never did put cameras into use that they had put on those poles, so they offered the poles to us to put our cameras on, he said. ....

CANTON  City Council on Monday approved a $257 million temporary budget for 2021.
It allows city departments to spend money before the council adopts a permanent budget by the end of March, as required by state law.
We will do a bigger presentation on the budget when we cross into 2021, Finance Director Mark Crouse told council members.
Councilwoman Christine Schulman, D-at large, and Councilman Frank Morris, D-9, were absent for the vote, which received no objections from those present.
The temporary budget includes $64 million in general fund appropriations with $19.4 million for the Police Department and $17.1 million for the Fire Department. There also is $12 million appropriated for capital projects, such as sewer and street work, according to city documents.    ....
