ACCORDING to critic and psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva, abjection involves either a confrontation with our sense of physical being or a separation between the self and a rejected “other.” Objects of revulsion can be tangible, such as faeces and bodily fluids, but some forms of dread are abstract and ambiguous.
The New Abject collection of horror stories draws on the broad nature of Kristeva’s definition, which has inspired a loosely related set of tales that deal with the things that make us shudder and retch.
There are science-fictional dystopias, traditional hauntings, tales of body horror, social realism and surreal satire. And, as is customary for Comma Press, there is a blend of new talent and established storytellers.
Staunton schools to keep current hybrid learning plan for rest of school year
STAUNTON The Staunton School Board has decided not to increase in-person instruction days this academic year.
Superintendent Garett Smith and Executive Director of Instruction Stephanie Haskins made a presentation Monday at a called meeting concerning students returning four days a week beginning May 6.
After the presentation, the School Board voted unanimously to keep the current hybrid model two days of in-person instruction and three days of virtual learning in place for the remainder of the academic year.
With the school year ending in Staunton May 20, a four-day-a-week schedule would have only been in place for the final two weeks of the year. It would have also necessitated two teacher workdays to prepare for the change, meaning the overall gain would have been two in-person instruction days.

STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - A majority of Staunton students have been learning virtually all year, but that changes next Tuesday as they head to the classroom when Staunton City Schools implements its hybrid teaching plan.
The School Board talked about bringing students back during a meeting Monday night.
Select students have been going to the schools, including pre-K, English language learners, and students needing additional supports. For the first time this school year, all students will have that opportunity. For many, it’s their first time back in a school classroom in 10 months.
