Charlotte-based Atrium Health is opening a new trial for children ages 12 to 17 that will test a COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Novavax, the hospital system announced on Friday.
Currently, there is no COVID-19 vaccine authorized in the U.S. for children under the age of 16, though Pfizer is expected to receive emergency federal approval as early as Monday for its vaccine to be administered in people ages 12 to 15.
To enroll in the Novavax trial at Atrium, children must be 12 to 17 years old, not have been previously diagnosed with COVID-19, not be receiving treatment for cancer and not have any medical condition that affects their immune system response. Children who participate in the study will be monitored for two years, during which researchers will perform blood tests and nose swabs to evaluate the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Coronavirus vaccine testing starts in Charlotte region
Rollout of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine started this week at Atrium Health facilities across the country. The clinical trial will test the safety and effectiveness of a Novavax vaccine to combat coronavirus.
While testing is already underway, the company is still looking for people interested in signing up for the trial.

1. Different than already in-use vaccines.
Coronavirus vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna work by introducing a new spike protein to the human body, promoting immune cells to break down the proteins in order to learn how to combat and protect against them.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - It’s a big week in Mecklenburg County as the first mass vaccinations of the public kicked off.
People in phase 1B Group 1, anyone 75 or older, are now able to get the shot by appointment only through the Mecklenburg County Health Department and Atrium and Novant Health.
The health department is vaccinating roughly 350 seniors each day and is fully booked through January with 5,000 appointments.
“We’re trying to work with our partners to make sure it’s readily available across all three organizations,” Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris said.
