The global refugee crisis is being brought to life for New Zealand audiences in a new opera co-written by a former Afghani refugee, which promises to give a voice to the inhumane treatment of refugees worldwide.
Acclaimed composer Dr Michael Williams, with librettists Nida Fiazi, and internationally-awarded poet Dr Tracey Slaughter, from the University of Waikato, School of Arts, are developing the first act of:
Du’a (Prayer) for Broken Shelter.
Michael says the opera brings to life the refugee crisis as it follows one family’s journey fleeing the trauma of their homeland to Aotearoa. The opera harnesses the powerful voice and lived experience of librettist Nida Fiazi, a former Afghan refugee.

Auckland Choral s Messiah is a highlight of the city s musical calendar. Two performances of the oratorio invariably bring in sizeable audiences, with many experiencing their only concert hall outing of the year. Uwe Grodd s congenial welcome always places the performance in a topical context. In 2018 the conductor made a brief Brexit quip; tonight was described as a much-appreciated level 1 Messiah (he had been concerned that it might have been cancelled as happened during the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic).

NZSO launches innovative Festival series and more special events in 2021 The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will introduce an innovative Festival series and expand its popular and accessible Setting Up Camp tour to more communities in 2021.
The multi-day Festival and Setting Up Camp tours are in addition to an exciting selection of other concerts and special events the national orchestra will present next year.
Renowned international conductors Marin Alsop, Vasily Petrenko, Asher Fisch and James Judd will join New Zealanders Gemma New, Holly Mathieson and NZSO Principal Conductor in Residence Hamish McKeich for the Orchestra’s 2021 Season.
Acclaimed New Zealand pianists Stephen De Pledge and Diedre Irons, soprano Madeleine Pierard, mezzo-soprano Kristin Darragh, tenor Simon O’Neill and bass Paul Whelan are among the soloists confirmed. NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen directs a programme which includes Vivaldi’s The Four Season
