The U.S. Senate voted 51-48 on May 25 to confirm Kristen Clarke to head the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division. She will lead a Civil Rights Division (CRD) of the DOJ that has become less a race-neutral enforcer of civil rights laws and more a government wing of progressive organizations. A bill currently before Congress would give that politicized division sweeping powers over North Carolina’s elections.
Christopher Coates, a former American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who served in the Voting Section in the Civil Rights Division, brought the discriminatory rift in the DOJ to light in 2010 testimony to Congress. While Coates worked on several cases enforcing the Voting Rights Act, he ran into resistance from within the DOJ on one case: ....

President Biden issued a plea for policing legislation Tuesday after meeting privately at the White House with family members of George Floyd on the first anniversary of his death in the custody of Minneapolis police. The meeting came as negotiations continue in Congress on a bill bearing Floyd’s name.
“We have to act. We face an inflection point,” the president said in a statement. “The battle for the soul of America has been a constant push and pull between the American ideal that we’re all created equal and the harsh reality that racism has long torn us apart. At our best, the American ideal wins out. It must again.” ....

Remembering High Wycombe music venue and pub The Nags Head


Many readers who grew up in High Wycombe will remember the iconic music venue and pub that played host to dozens of legendary bands.
The much-loved Nags Head pub, in London Road, was a favourite with music fans in its heyday in the 60s and 70s, with thousands cramming into the pub to hear the latest hits from big names, who would often sign the famous green room wall.
It hosted many celebrated bands including Thin Lizzy, Sex Pistols, Status Quo, Police and U2.
The once-renowned night spot was turned into flats in 2018 – but that didn’t stop members of the BFP’s We Grew Up in Wycombe Facebook group reminiscing about the pub. ....
