The publication, produced by Journalism Students at the University of Limerick, which has won a number of National Student Media Awards including Newspaper of the Year, is distributed with this week’s edition of the Limerick Leader newspaper. IMAGE: Christine Costello/Penn State “There is a tremendous enthusiasm around the country for localized food systems and urban agriculture,” said lead researcher Christine Costello, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, College of Agricultural Sciences, Penn State. “We wanted to determine how much nutrition urban agriculture really can contribute to find out what’s feasible as well as how much land is required to meet the population’s needs.” Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic exposing weaknesses in food supply chains, the focus on localizing food systems has sharpened, especially in and around big cities. Answering questions about how much food urban agriculture actually can contribute is more important than ever, Costello pointed out. For example, a recent study found that 30% of Boston’s fruit and vegetable demand could be met in Boston through soil-based and rooftop urban agriculture. ....
Date Time Urban agriculture in Chicago does not allow consumers to rely solely on local food Environmental Science & Technology Environmentally conscious consumers try to “buy local” when food shopping. Now, a study of food raised around Chicago has shown that buying local can’t provide all necessary nutrients for area residents, though it could fulfill their needs if some nutrients were supplied as supplements. The researchers report in ACS’ Environmental Science & Technology that urban agriculture made little difference in reducing overall land area, and thus distance, required to supply all nutritional needs. As the U.S. population continues to flow to urban regions, consumers are moving farther from farms and croplands. This limits nutrient recycling and drives up emissions associated with transporting food.
