While there is still opposition, the gathering April 23 was able to identify some areas where the town can mandate changes to the plan to alleviate some of the neighbors’ concerns. Town Manager John O’Keefe said the group, which included Jeff Williams, director of the Department of Public Works, Christina Haskins, town engineer, neighbors Brian Benson and John Benson, and representatives of the developer, including architect Kirk Moore, walked the road.

At a meeting held remotely Monday, Brattleboro Planning Director Sue Fillion said the project started in the fall with state funding and covers Route 9 from Main Street up to the Exit 2 interchange on Interstate 91. “I think this is awesome,” said Dave Cohen, director and founder of VBike, which seeks to increase the number of bicyclists in Vermont by making biking accessible in a variety of ways. Monday marked the second public meeting to solicit feedback. At a meeting in December, the project garnered a lot of support from the community.

Town deals with garbage bag, phone issues

BRATTLEBORO — Phone lines went down and mislabeled garbage bags went out, causing some frustration around town. When postcards about absentee ballots for the March 2 election started going out last week, the town’s phone lines stopped working for about two days due to an issue within the system that affected other groups as well. The state’s online My Voter Page also wasn’t working around the same time. “The card is encouraging people to either call the town clerk’s office or go to MyVoterPage and people were striking out in both efforts through no fault of their own,” Town Manager Peter Elwell said at the Select Board meeting held remotely Tuesday. “There was a lot of frustration around that understandably.”

A scoping study for lanes along the route is underway thanks to a grant the town received from the state last year. The project initially came as a request to the Brattleboro Traffic Safety Committee from the Brattleboro Coalition of Active Transportation. “Route 9 has historically been focused on vehicle use like most of the roads in Vermont, but as more and more people walk or cycle back and forth downtown for work, school, errands or entertainment, a combination of pedestrian and bicycles becomes more important,” Christina Haskins of Dufresne Group said at a forum held remotely Wednesday to get public input as initial plans are put together.
