A few months ago, my friend Danielle, who knows me well, sent me a link to a childrenâs picture book by Arlington author Carrie Finison. The book, a January 2021 release, was called âDonât Hug Doug.â
I understood the joke.
I
can hug, but rarely do I want to. Iâm bad at them, despite appreciating them and wanting others to enjoy theirs. Iâd rather just nod hello or wave goodbye. I think it stems from allergies; a simple hug with someone who owns a cat can ruin my day and drown me in Benadryl. Not everyone is meant to be physically close to others, for a myriad of reasons.

Following the conviction of Derek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd, a lot of politicians, public figures, and brands issued statements in response. Some of them shouldn’t have.
“Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice,” Nancy Pelosi said during a news conference Tuesday. “For being there to call out to your mom, how heartbreaking was that to call out for your mom, ‘I can’t breathe. ”
“And because of you,” she continued, “your name will always be synonymous with justice.”
