Jay-based RSU 73 superintendent says seven positions may be lost if no budget increase

JAY Superintendent Scott Albert told directors of Regional School Unit 73 on Thursday night that if the current district budget is maintained for 2021-22, $597,000 would have to be cut from the proposed spending plan.
“I went through supplies, equipment, repair lines, everything except special education and cut 10%,” Albert said. “Even after that, we’d lose four teachers, two education technicians and a bus monitor just to get us on even ground.
“There may be a year that will have to happen,” he said. “I don’t think this is the year.”
Unlike towns, school districts can only carry over 3% of unspent money annually, Albert said. After that, the district has three years to spend anything over that, he noted. ....

Family resource festival set for March 6 at SMHS

JAY Southern 21st Century Kids of F.R.A.N.K.L.I.N. will be hosting a family resource festival Saturday, March 6, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spruce Mountain High School.
“All CDC guidelines will be followed, with masks and social distancing closely monitored,” high school social worker Kristy Labonte wrote in an email Friday, Feb. 19. Activities will include sledding, snowshoeing, horse and carriage rides, bonfire with s’mores kits, raffles and door prizes, goodie bags, hot dogs, and popcorn, she continued.
Face masks will be available for those who don’t have them, she said in a later phone interview. Some snowshoes and sleds will be provided, she noted. ....

REGION Long before the coronavirus pandemic struck, volunteers throughout Regional School District 73 were making a difference for students. While there have had to be some changes, even more is being done for students within the schools they attend now.
“One thing about this community, it’s always been amazing, comes together in a time of crisis,” high school guidance counselor Chris Beaudion said at the Jan. 14 school board meeting.
Judy Hamilton of Hartford has stitched almost 1,600 masks for students at the elementary school. She has made almost 6,000 masks to date and came to help the local school in a roundabout way. ....
