Central athletes win major campus awards
PELLA Three Central College senior student-athletes received major honors for their impact on campus.
The awards were announced as part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council’s (SAAC) Dutchies event Sunday evening, held at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
Laurynn Mize (senior, Sycamore, Ill.), who competes in women’s tennis and triathlon, received the Prins Sportsmanship Award, women’s track and field athlete Kiki Pingel (senior, Pella) received the Marjorie Giles Student Life Leadership Award and baseball player Chris Hensley (senior, Ottumwa) was presented the Ron Schipper Leadership Award.
The Prins Sportsmanship Award, named after Tunis W. and Harriet B. Prins, is given to a student, athlete or non-athlete, who has demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship in dealing with fellow students on campus or in meeting life’s challenges. ....

Thorlabs Releases New Picosecond Microchip Laser With Material Processing Capabilities
Thorlabs has announced the release of a new passively Q-switched laser producing 500 ps pulses centered at 1030 nm. The microjoule-level pulse energies produced at kHz-repetition rates will allow for multiple applications including material processing, harmonic generation, LIDAR, photoacoustic imaging, and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. A fiber-coupled pump source within the head produces exceptional beam quality for efficient micromachining applications.
With a compact footprint measuring just 3.00” x 5.37” (76.2 mm x 136.3 mm) and taps for 30 mm cage system compatibility, this laser can be conveniently integrated into an existing system and paired with any number of Thorlabs’ cage-mounted components, including optics, motorized shutters, and galvo scanners. GREAT FALLS â On Sunday afternoon, Alliance For Youth hosted a Native American beading class.
Alliance For Youth works to ensure the healthy development of young people by reducing underage drinking, drug abuse, and dependency.
They partnered with The Sober Life, an organization that works with people who have suffered from addiction and provide them with an outlet to connect with their community.
The hour-long Native American beading class was free to attend and it was the second time The Sober Life has hosted the beading class event. ....
