Letters: a valiant campaign on care homes, but the pain goes on
Nicci Gerrard’s laudable drive to highlight the plight of care home residents does not lessen the grief of loss

Nicci Gerrard, through her writings in this newspaper and lead role in John’s Campaign, has done more than just effect yet another government U-turn (“Why did the government take so long to back down on this care home cruelty?”, Comment). She highlighted the patchwork of care homes covering more than 450,000 residents and their loved ones and how they had become “jails of enforced loneliness”, where Covid was not the only killer. That jolted me into connecting with other patient carers to channel and help assuage the pain of suffering in isolation, hitherto without mutual support and always ....

Winchester Writers' Event to be virtual, says Sara Gangai

Sara Gangai
WINCHESTER Writers Weekend is being held virtually once again after a successful inaugural event in 2020.
Originally planned to be held in the city in-person, director Sara Gangai decided it was safer to hold it online until Covid eases.
The event provides opportunities for writers to hone their craft, rub elbows with published authors and other writers, and meet one-to-one with literary agents for feedback.
Ms Gangai said: “Last year we had around 250 people take part in the event but this year bookings are already exceeding expectations as we have two amazing keynote speakers, including Diana Gabaldon, author of the hugely popular Outlander series, and Chris Riddell, best-selling children’s author/illustrator. ....

Agenda: Bringing the magic of authors to our schools

By Marc Lambert
WHEN the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour began in 1998, the idea was simple: bring the magic of an author visit to every community and remote area in Scotland. Since then, the tour has expanded, covering Northern Ireland, England and Wales.
For many students, this may be the only chance they have to meet a writer in real life. As a national charity, promoting reading culture in schools and educational settings is one of Scottish Book Trust’s key aims, and thanks to the tour, more than 130,000 children have had the opportunity to meet authors like Julia Donaldson, Chris Riddell and Malorie Blackman. ....

Children's laureates campaign for £100m a year to fix primary school libraries | Libraries

Last modified on Tue 13 Apr 2021 03.41 EDT
All of the UK’s children’s laureates, including Cressida Cowell, Quentin Blake, Malorie Blackman and Michael Rosen, are uniting to call for the government to dedicate £100m a year to revitalising “deteriorating” primary school libraries across the country, amid fears that literacy levels have dropped severely during the pandemic.
In an impassioned letter to prime minister Boris Johnson, Cowell, the current laureate, calls for £100m to be ringfenced for building new and restoring neglected libraries every year, saying that millions of children are “missing out on opportunities to discover the life-changing magic of reading”. ....
