What a difference a year makes in Colorado's case for a public option plan

What a difference a year makes in Colorado’s case for a public option plan
Before the pandemic, Colorado looked set to become the second state to pass what s known as a public option health insurance plan, which would have forced hospitals that lawmakers said were raking in obscene profits to accept lower payments. But when covid-19 struck, legislators hit pause.
Now, after a year of much public lionizing of doctors and other health professionals on the front lines of the covid fight, it s a lot harder to make the case hospitals are fleecing patients.
It is much more difficult now that we have this narrative of the health care heroes, said Sarah McAfee, director of communications for the Center for Health Progress, a Denver-based health advocacy organization that pushed for the public option. Part of this is separating the two: The people who are providing the health care are not the same as the corporations who are focused on the bottom line. ....

(The Center Square) Colorado lawmakers significantly amended their public option bill on Tuesday after weeks of negotiations.
Amendments to
House Bill 21-1232 remove the part of the bill that would create the Colorado Option, a state-run insurance plan that supporters have argued would decrease premiums and insurance rates.
Gov. Jared Polis endorsed the amended bill on Tuesday, calling it a pretty good deal for the state.
The
original bill ordered the private health care providers to reduce insurance coverage premiums by 20% over two-and-a-half years, while the amended bill is estimated to save Coloradans approximately 18% on their insurance premiums over the next three years. ....

No more "public option" for Colorado - State of Reform

Following two weeks of inaction, Rep. Dylan Roberts re-introduced his Colorado Option bill to the House Health and Insurance Committee on Tuesday with a new amendment that eliminates the “public option” provision of the bill entirely. Committee members adopted the amendment and passed HB 21-1232 with an 8-5 vote, advancing the heavily modified bill to the House Appropriations Committee.
In a significant change of direction from when the bill was first introduced, the sponsors decided to cede to the concerns of private sector stakeholders and remove the bill’s plan to introduce a state-sponsored insurance option to the market if insurers fail to reduce premiums.  ....
