B.C.'s Howden crowned ski cross king

Howden grabbed the lead right out of the start gate in the men’s big final and held it all the way to the finish to earn his fourth World Cup win of the season. The FIS points champion has already clinched the Crystal Globe and Saturday’s win came with the coveted Golden Crown presented annually to the respective men’s and women’s winners in Sunny Valley.
“I was feeling really confident going into the big final,” said Howden, on fis-ski.com. “At the first few heats of the day, I was a little bit nervous at the start, but as I made my way through the competition, the confidence came back. And standing in that start gate just now, I was feeling so good, so I just sent it and I am so happy with the result.” ....

PG ski cross racer Gairns fourth in inaugural World Cup team event

Reece Howden, the Crystal Globe series points champion from Cultus Lake, did his part in the Big Final, winning the men’s race, but only by the slightest of margins. Just 16 hundreds of a second separated first from fourth.
In the mixed team event, the women wait in the start gate and the gate drops as soon as their male partner crosses the finish. Gairns hung within striking distance of the leaders for the entire race and was in third place behind Fanny Smith of Switzerland and was right on the tail of second place Sandra Naeslund of Sweden as the skiers approached the bottom part of the course. ....

The 22-year-old former alpine racer known as “Big Rig” has been dominant in the World Cup with a sizeable lead in the overall standings. Howden currently has 470 points, with Ryan Regaz and Johnas Lehnerr, both of Switzerland, with 341 and 298 points respectively.
Perhaps the best news for Howden is the venue for the worlds ski cross: Idre Fjall, Sweden, the same race track where he won back-to-back races in late January.
You could say his confidence is sky high.
But what’s with the “Big Rig” nickname?
