April 21, 2021 - 6:00 AM For roughly the last 30 years, Chris Charlesworth has watched all sorts of birds thrive at the Kelowna landfill. It s is a popular bird watching spot, due to its variety of scavenging birds, including gulls and eagles, in addition to various waterfowl and shorebirds like the American avocet, which only nests in a few places in B.C., Charlesworth, the owner of bird-watching company Avocet Tours, said. Over the last year however, the landfill has been closed to bird watching due to the pandemic. “It’s too bad, but obviously I understand why they don’t want extra people coming in… the kind of concern is they won’t let us back in after COVID,” he said, adding there are few landfills that allow bird watchers to view the birds. ....

Chris Charlesworth, who owns Avocet Tours, an Okanagan bird-watching company, said both trumpeter and tundra swans can be seen on Okanagan Lake and in the Interior in the winter. They tend to fly into the area in mid-October from the north and hang around until March. ....

The count, which dates back to 1963 in Kelowna, sees birders hit urban and forested area in a 12-kilometre radius to see how many bird species they can find, organizer Chris Charlesworth said Dec. 21. Similar counts occur across the Okanagan, and beyond. In fact, it’s a bit of competition for bragging rights that Kelowna often comes up on top of. “When we did our count in Kelowna on Saturday we did have a few more species than normal,” Charlesworth said, adding that the overall number so far is 111 and last year there was just 110. ....
